Quo Vadis
"Quo Vadis" in Latin is a question that many of us may need to ask
ourselves at one time or another. It means, "Where are you going?"
Many years ago according to the legend, the question, "Quo Vadis Domine?",
was asked of the apparition of Jesus Christ by St. Peter the Apostle who
was running away from the burning Rome and from the persecution of early
Christians. "I am going to Rome, Peter, to take care of my flock since you
are leaving them", responded the apparition. St. Peter turned around on the
Via Appia and went back to Rome where, about a week later, he was crucified
with other Christians. If you were to visit Rome today, you may find at the
entrance to the Catacombs at the site of St.Peter's vision, a small stone
chapel dating back to the 6th or 7th century. On the front of this chapel,
carved in stone, are the words "Quo Vadis Domine".
